Leaving foster care

What was it like when you moved from foster care to your new family? (Boy age 7)

Question: What was it like when you moved from foster care to your new family? (Boy age 7)

Response from our Ambassador Rebecca:

I was your age when I moved from foster care to my adoptive family. We started off by watching a video and reading a book that my adoptive parents had made, then we started going for days out and this contact with my new family was built up over a short period and included a sleepover. I remember this time as very exciting, but equally scary at the same time. The day we moved permanently to our new family I found my feelings quite confusing. I felt sad because I was leaving my foster carers and I had lived with them for a while. It meant moving school, leaving friends and everything that was normal to me. However, I also knew it was a new and exciting beginning.

The day we moved, we took all our things into our new house and it felt like a safe home with people who I knew I was safe with and they were going to love me. Not everyone will have the same feelings as me, but it’s important that you know it’s OK to feel all kinds of emotions.
